The pride of Holland
There are some places in your own country that you simply have to visit. Such as Tiengemeten Island. An eccentric Dutch island that is oh so quintessentially Dutch. It is as if time has stood still here. Soak up the atmosphere of the Dutch countryside of yesteryear. Visit the museums housed on classic farmsteads. Look out over the river and the expansive flatlands. Then sit down for a refreshing drink on a terrace at Herberg Tiengemeten restaurant, or eat a tasty pancake at Pannenkoeken bij Hèlène restaurant.

Into the wilderness
Tiengemeten is a walkers’ paradise. You may see the odd car or bicycle on the northerly side of the island. Other than that, walkers have the place to themselves. Select a yellow signposted route and visit the loveliest places. Or go on an expedition through the vast wilderness. The visitors’ centre is an ideal base. Walking is permitted all over the island. There are three different, demarcated walking routes. The Natuurmonumenten information centre is located in the Marguarithehoeve barn, near the ferry landing stage.

Ukkie Island, with water, sand, shallow banks and shallow streams, is a natural paradise for our tiniest guests. Parents can easily supervise while toddlers and pre-schoolers splash in the turtle fountain or wade through the little stream. The wooden pavilion offers shelter from the sun and wind and is the ideal base camp for young adventurers. Showers, toilets and the food and drink kiosk are close by.
Tiengemeten Island
Tiengemeten is an island in the province of South Holland. It became part of Korendijk municipality during the municipal reorganisation of 1984, but was split between Goudswaard and Zuid-Beijerland prior to that. The name reflects the size: “gemet” is the Dutch word for an old land measurement unit in excess of 0.4 hectares. Tiengemeten is 7 km in length and 2 km wide. Of course, the size and name of the island no longer correspond: 10 “gemeten” are approximately 4 hectares, i.e. a piece of land 100 by 400 metres in size. Originally, the island was predominantly leased to farmers. Since 1997, Natuurmonumenten has managed it as a wetlands area.
